“Over the course of two days, over 50 participants from all around the country, some as far away as Louisiana, had the opportunity to learn from a professional ecclesiastical tailor the ins-and-outs of crafting beautiful vestments for the liturgy.”

“Archbishop Cordileone was wearing a pontifical alb specially designed and tailored by Susan-Jayne Caballero, who operates out of Norwalk, Connecticut. Mrs. Caballero is well-known in Connecticut and the New York area for her beautiful heirloom-quality bespoke sacred vestments. But we were pleasantly surprised to find out, when we attended the Pontifical Mass in San Francisco, that her reputation has spread to the west coast.”
Here is an in-depth look at the alb and surplices we created for this very special Mass.

“Continuing on with our consideration of the liturgical art that was produced for the commemoration of St. Junipero Serra in the San Francisco area, we now turn to the vestments that were produced for the occasion, beginning with the solemn Mass set itself.”
The alb we created for this special Pontifical Mass is mentioned in this piece featuring the vestments handmade by the very talented team at Altarworthy.

“Sacra Indumenta in Connecticut are making a name for themselves with an enhanced level of quality craftsmanship (and very interesting workshops). This brings to mind the good old days of family owned full-service design and tailoring ateliers in places like Lyon, Milan, Genoa, and Naples that for decades made quality appurtenances for the altar while also teaching the next generation to produce heirloom quality bespoke vestments and liturgical paramenti made of the finest materials.”
John Paul Sonnen pays us a great compliment by noticing our work, both in craftsmanship and in education.

“Another theological distinction, art is the expression of the beautiful. In the Catholic tradition, beauty is an ontological reality, a theological category. The search for beauty is not just about mere aestheticism. Art in this case has the capacity to reveal the greatness of the dignity of the office of the priesthood, ultimately manifesting divine beauty.”

Threads of Continuity
Stewards of Sacred Treasure
“There’s something dignified and instinctively symbolic, with Christ, His Church and the linens that serve their Divine purpose in the Mass. Sacred vestments become a living memorial and are highly tangible to our senses as they move about with the priests who wear them in persona Christi. They soak in the fragrance of incense, offer beauty in colorful symbolic motifs and feel rich to the touch with the luster and gentility of finely woven natural fibers.”
Read Susan-Jayne’s thoughtful reflection on the meaning, devotion, and art of painstakingly restoring sacred vestments, published by The Society of St. Hugh of Cluny.
